Vol. 501 No. 1

Written Answers. - Departmental Investigations.

Eamon Gilmore

Ceist:

77 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his Department was involved in the seizure of a consignment of cattle on 5 January 1999 at Nenagh, County Tipperary; his views on whether the cattle were smuggled from Northern Ireland; the exact location of the seizure; to whom the cattle were being consigned; the steps, if any, he has taken as a result of the seizure; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5262/99]

The seizure referred to took place as part of a joint Garda Síochána/Department of Agriculture and Food investigation. The cattle concerned were seized on the public road on suspicion that they had been illegally imported from Northern Ireland. Investigations into the situation are continuing.
