Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

Ulick Burke

Ceist:

274 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Finance when finance will be made available by his Department for the flood alleviation for the three small schemes identified by his Department through the report of consultants into drainage in south Galway at Rathorpe, Kilcrest, Manin and Greggclare; the plans, if any, he has for alleviating flooding at these locations following the cost benefit analysis; and his views on whether these works should be grant aided and carried out as soon as possible. [7757/99]

The cost benefit analysis as outlined in the flood study report for south Galway was negative in all the areas mentioned with the exception of Termon/Rathorpe. In the case of Termon, there are very significant environmental reservations expressed in the report. However, I am currently making arrangements to have the three small schemes in question re-examined with a view to confirming if any of the schemes can be undertaken within the parameters of being cost effective and environmentally acceptable.
