Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Brian O'Shea

Ceist:

529 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the urgent measures, if any, he proposes to substantially improve the civilian-garda ratio in the Waterford and Kilkenny division; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7938/99]

The detailed deployment of Garda personnel to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities who have informed me that the current personnel strength for Waterford-Kilkenny division, as of 3/3/99, is 328 members – all ranks. They have also informed me that the Waterford-Kilkenny division has a garda-population ratio of 1:494 which has improved from a previous ratio of 1:535.

The Garda authorities have further informed me that when additional personnel next become available, the needs of the Waterford and Kilkenny division will be fully considered in con junction with the needs of other Garda divisions throughout the country.
