595 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number who applied to sit the leaving certificate examination for each of the past five years; the number who completed the examination; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7750/99]
The total number of candidates who applied to sit the leaving certificate examination and the total number of candidates who sat at least one subject in the examination in the past five years is set out in the table below. I should add that examination entries are received in my Department in October of the year prior to the examination.
The Deputy will be aware that maximising the retention rate to completion of senior cycle has been a policy priority of successive Governments. I am determined that we will continue to make progress in this most difficult area by using the full range of initiatives and interventions available to us. These include curricular reform, legislation and targeted interventions.
