Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Examination.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

646 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Education and Science his views on the need for elite athletes including swimmers (details supplied) accreditation in their leaving certificate in order that they can continue in third level education following the extensive training they undergo at second level in this country rather than having to travel abroad to benefit from sports scholarships. [8298/99]

As the Deputy is aware, physical education is an established subject on the second level, post primary curriculum. I believe that on leaving school with their leaving certificate, students should have their achievements in all disciplines given due recognition. The student who displays a keen interest and a talent in physical education should have the same opportunity for recognition through the leaving certificate as an artist or musician does. The inclusion of physical education on the leaving certificate syllabus will allow students to graduate from their post primary schooling with a more comprehensive profile of attainment.

I have requested the national council for curriculum and assessment to investigate the feasibility of including physical education as a leaving certificate subject. I have asked the NCCA to prepare a draft leaving certificate syllabus and it is my intention that the subject will be introduced into the leaving certificate curriculum in the school year 2001-02.

In relation to the question of third level sports scholarships, I understand that while swimmers are not precluded from applying for the sports scholarships offered by some of the third level institutions, these institutions do not currently have the facilities which would be required by elite swimmers available. As the Deputy will be aware, preparations for the provision of a 50 metre swimming pool are at an advanced stage. Finally, I would draw the Deputy's attention to the international carding scheme introduced by my colleague, the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation, which provides supports, including financial support, to assist Ireland's higher performance athletes.
