Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Community Use of Schools.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

75 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to introduce arrangements relative to insurance and other overheads which would guarantee that schools could be available for community uses after normal school hours. [8161/99]

The use of schools outside of normal school time is a matter for individual school management authorities and I am aware that the management authorities of many schools already make their premises available for community and other uses outside of normal school hours.

I am very much in favour of the use of school facilities by members of the community and I would strongly urge school management authorities to view such requests in a positive way.

I am not aware that the present arrangements place an undue restriction upon the use of school facilities after school hours and, accordingly, I am satisfied that these arrangements should continue.
