Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - EU Directives.

John Gormley

Ceist:

104 Mr. Gormley asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment when she will give legislative effect to the COMMA Directive 96/82/EC; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [7731/99]

Council Directive 96/82/EC on the control of major accident hazards involving dangerous substances –‘Seveso 2' Directive – was due to be implemented in Ireland by 3 February 1999. Regulations to transpose this directive are currently at an advanced stale of preparation. The implementation of the regulations will require the involvement and co-operation of a number of Departments and public bodies, including the Health and Safety Authority.

I intend to bring the regulations into effect as soon as all necessary consultations have been completed and the legal drafting of the measures has been finalised.
