Vol. 502 No. 3

Written Answers. - Afforestation Programme.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

134 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the reason 90 acres of land belonging to a person (details supplied) in County Mayo was deemed as unsuitable for forestry planting in view of the fact the adjoining 25 acres of land is suitable. [8081/99]

The applicant applied to plant two parcels of land in early 1998. The area was subsequently inspected by the local forestry inspector who advised that the land would not be capable of producing a commercial crop of wood and the applicant was accordingly advised in September 1998. The applicant has since appealed this decision and this appeal will take the form of an inspection by two of the senior inspectors in the Department. Each application to plant land is determined on its merits and the initial inspection would have had cognisance of the fact that the adjoining areas were planted.
