Vol. 502 No. 6

Written Answers. - Inheritance Tax.

John Perry

Ceist:

193 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Finance if the outstanding amount due in inheritance tax will be waived for a person (details supplied) in County Sligo in view of the fact that she had to borrow funds to pay the tax; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8807/99]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the correct amount of inheritance tax has been paid. However, due to late payment, interest has been imposed in accordance with legislation. They do not feel that a waiver or reduction of the basic interest liability can be justified when all the circumstances are taken into account. However, as has already been pointed out to the solicitor acting for the taxpayer, they are prepared to accept payment of the amount due by instalments. Normally, each instalment would attract further interest. In this instance, they are prepared to freeze the liability at the current figure.
