Age-standardised incidence and mortality rates for all cancers excluding skin cancer are set out in the table below for Ireland and selected EU countries. Information on the success and/or sur vival rates associated with specific cancer treatments and outcomes is not available at this time.
The National Cancer Strategy provides for a comprehensive set of measures aimed at developing the full range of cancer related services. This ranges from health promotion, screening and early detection, treatment services and palliative care. In the period 1997-99 a total of £25 million has been allocated in these areas to address regional imbalances in services, develop appropriate screening programmes and re-organise the structure and delivery of services.
Regional directors of cancer services in each health board area have been developing cancer plans for their region, and the process of implementing the National Cancer Strategy is continuing.
