Vol. 502 No. 6

Written Answers. - Glass Milk Bottles.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

255 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has considered subsidisation as a means of continuing to have milk deliveries made in bottles rather than the proposed abandonment of bottle deliveries by the main company involved in liquid milk supply; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9105/99]

I have no proposals to subsidise the use of glass milk bottles.

Apart from other considerations, such an approach would have implications in the context of EU competition law, and of article 18 of EU Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging waste, which prohibits member states from impeding the placing on the market of packaging which satisfies the requirements of the directive.
