Vol. 502 No. 6

Written Answers. - Schoosl Building Projects.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

304 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason for the delay in approving stages four and five in respect of the proposal for extension of facilities at St. Mary's College, Naas, County Kildare; if he will give urgent approval in order to expedite the process; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8706/99]

Stages four and five for the proposed extension project at St. Mary's College, Naas, County Kildare are currently being considered in my Department's post primary building unit. The question of the invitation of tenders will be considered when this process has been completed. I can assure the Deputy that there has been no delay associated with this important project.

At this stage I cannot say when construction will commence. I would, however, point out that the provision of almost £60 million for post-primary school building projects in this year's Estimates, in comparison with £30 million in the 1997 budget, will enable me to proceed with a significantly increased number of projects.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

305 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science the situation regarding the proposed Coralstown national school, County Westmeath; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8725/99]

On 10 January, I announced a new initiative on school ownership at primary and post primary levels. Under this initiative, the option of State ownership will be available to the patrons of new schools.

In my statement of 10 January, I indicated that discussions would be held with all interested parties on operational arrangements for the new initiative. To this end, a working group has been established in my Department and is currently examining the implementation details. When this work is finalised, my Department will be in a position to advance individual projects, such as Coralstown national school, Mullingar, County Westmeath.
