Vol. 502 No. 6

Written Answers. - Maintenance Grants.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

331 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science if a maintenance grant will be approved for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 3; and the circumstances, if any, whereby a maintenance grant will be paid for a one year course. [9079/99]

Under the terms of the European Social Fund aided maintenance grants scheme for post leaving certificate courses 1999, grants are available to eligible candidates who are entering approved PLC courses for the first time in the 1998-99 school year or who are already in attendance on an approved PLC course. However, candidates are ineligible if they already hold an NCVA Level 2 or Level 3 qualification or a third level qualification at national certificate, national diploma, degree, post-graduate or equivalent level. Furthermore, grants are not payable in respect of a second period of attendance at the same level for a course approved for the purposes of this scheme, irrespective of whether or not a grant was paid previously.

As the candidate, to whom the Deputy refers, already holds an NCYA Level 2 qualification she is ineligible for grant assistance to pursue a second course at the same level, year one of the Aestheticiene Diploma. However should she progress to the optional year two of this course she would be eligible to apply for grant assistance under the terms of the scheme.
