Vol. 502 No. 6

Written Answers. - Aquaculture Licences.

Michael Ferris

Ceist:

79 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the objections from Gweebarra Bay Conservation Group to the granting of an aquaculture licence to an organisation (details supplied) under the Fisheries (Amendment) Act, 1997; if he will agree to an oral hearing on its appeal; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that this area is designated as a special area of conservation with its own colony of seals and wildlife; if his attention has further been drawn to the implications for local tourism, swimming, salmon fishing, sailing, canoeing and so on if this development takes place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9071/99]

Gweebarra Bay Conservation Group has appealed the particular licensing decision to the Aquaculture Licences Appeals Board, the independent statutory body established by me under the Fisheries (Amendment) Act, 1997 to consider and determine such appeals in accordance with that Act. It is a matter for the board to decide if an oral hearing should be held in relation to the appeal.

The Deputy will appreciate that in these circumstances I am unable to comment on the decision.
