A Bill to extend the protection afforded to Ireland's architectural heritage is currently being considered by the Dáil. Section 11 of that Bill enables a planning authority that wishes to restore the character of a structure protected under the provisions of the Planning Bill, to serve a notice on the owner or occupier to carry out restoration works. These works could include the removal of unsightly advertisements or signs, but a planning authority may have to pay for the cost of the works unless the notice relates to unauthorised development which was carried out within the previous five years.
