210 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the discussions, if any, he has had with Roscommon County Council in relation to the proposed development of a waste recycling depot at Ballaghadereen, County Roscommon; and if he will make a statement on the matter. In 1996, Roscommon County Council decided to grant planning permission for the construction of a privately operated waste transfer depot and recycling facility at Ballaghaderreen Industrial Estate, County Roscommon. This decision was upheld on appeal by An Bord Pleanala. The Minister for the Environment and Local Government is precluded by law from exercising any influence or control over planning authorities or An Bord Pleanala in the exercise of their statutory functions in particular circumstances. While officials of my Department met a deputation of local residents in May 1997 concerning this proposed development, no discussions have taken place between my Department and Roscommon County Council in the matter.
