Vol. 504 No. 4

Written Answers. - Archaeological Sites.

Phil Hogan

Ceist:

231 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the reason an application for funds for the restoration of the tower at Grangefertha, Johnstown, County Kilkenny, was refused; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11922/99]

I am not aware of an application for funds for the works in question having been made to Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department.

However, as Grangefertha Tower is in State ownership, the question of maintaining it is a matter for my Department. Following a recent inspection of the monument by Dúchas which showed it to be in good condition, I have no plans at present to have restoration works undertaken there. The only works being contemplated are of a routine maintenance nature which are expected to be carried out later this year.
