Vol. 504 No. 4

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Examination.

Austin Deasy

Ceist:

280 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of pupils who took French, Spanish, German and Italian in the 1998 leaving certificate; the projected number in each case for 1999; and the way in which this compares with the trend over the past 20 years. [12103/99]

The information requested in respect of the languages in question at the 1998 leaving certificate is: French 37,085, German 11,373, Spanish 1,674, Italian 160. The entry data for the 1999 examination indicates that the take up will be similar.

In relation to trends over the last 20 years the Deputy may wish to note in particular the change in the number taking German within an otherwise broadly static position. This is illustrated for example by looking at the position in 1990 when 35,887 students took French, 1,139 took Spanish, 105 took Italian and 3,377 took German compared to 11,373 last year.
