Vol. 504 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Michael D. Higgins

Ceist:

282 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Education and Science the position in relation to the provision of a building for a permanent school for the Galway school project; if the building will be provided for in the current year's capital expenditure; the time scale for the provision of the school; and if the Department's officials are in negotiation with Galway Corporation for a site for the school. [11881/99]

The planning and building unit of my Department has recently been in contact with Galway Corporation in relation to the site for the proposed new school referred to by the Deputy and has asked the city manager to indicate the purchase price.

The Department has also arranged for a valuation to be carried out and this will form the basis of the purchase negotiations. As soon as the site acquisition has been agreed in principle, architectural planning will commence. In anticipation of a successful outcome to the site purchase, the preliminary arrangements for architectural planning are being made.

At this early stage, it is not possible to provide a timetable for the start of construction for the school.
