Vol. 504 No. 4

Written Answers. - Ballistic Missile Tests.

Pat Rabbitte

Ceist:

61 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the Government's views on the successful test-firing by India and Pakistan of short and long-term missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. [12044/99]

The recent testing of ballistic missiles by India and Pakistan is a matter of considerable concern. These ballistic missile tests send a clear signal of intent to develop further their nuclear weapons capability in the face of calls by the international community for the exercise of restraint following their nuclear testing last year.

We are currently involved in efforts through the European Union and jointly with both India and Pakistan, to assist them in developing approaches to bilateral and regional security in the context of which they might avoid the further development of nuclear weapons.
