Vol. 504 No. 4

Written Answers. - Community Training Workshops.

John Perry

Ceist:

102 Mr. Perry asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to the employment situation at a workshop (details supplied) in Sligo which was started in 1984 and has successfully trained 1,000 trainees; if the staff problems will be investigated and addressed; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12097/99]

The workshop to which the Deputy refers is a community training workshop in Sligo.

Community training workshops are voluntary bodies which provide community-based training opportunities to socially or educationally disadvantaged young people. The workshops are under the control of management committees drawn from different sectors of the community. The management committees employ the staff in CTWs and are responsible for the terms and conditions of their employment.

FÁS provides funding for the payment of staff wages and for the payment of allowances to trainees in the workshops.

While I do not have any direct function in relation to the CTWs, my attention has been drawn to a number of structural and industrial relations matters which have arisen in relation to CTWs in general.

When these matters were brought to my attention, I asked my officials to examine the situation. My officials have arranged to bring the relevant parties together with a view to resolving the issues as soon as possible.
