Vol. 504 No. 4

Written Answers. - Post Leaving Certificate Courses.

Olivia Mitchell

Ceist:

104 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to the difficulties being experienced in attracting students to enrol in the new post leaving certificate teleservices courses; if she will undertake a campaign to promote these courses in view of their importance to the economy; and if she will liaise with the Department of Education and Science on the changes required to make this course more attractive. [12201/99]

Responsibility for provision and operation of post leaving certificate courses rests with the Department of Education and Science. My Department, along with its appropriate agencies, together with the Department of Education and Science participates in the expert group on future skills needs. The remit of this group is to examine emerging skills needs within the economy, including the teleservices sector.

Relevant agencies of my Department are also involved in the national skills awareness campaign which is being run under the auspices of the expert group on future skills needs. The primary objective of the campaign is to encourage second level students to consider a career in the expanding technology sector, which is of considerable importance to the Irish economy. As part of the awareness campaign, a range of measures have been undertaken to promote awareness of the opportunities available in the teleservices sector.

In addition to this work, a teleservices forum, which comprises representatives of companies from within the industry, is actively engaged in promoting teleservices as a career.
