Vol. 504 No. 5

Written Answers. - Public Service Employment.

David Stanton

Ceist:

124 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Finance if there is an upper age limit on those recruited to join the public service; if so, the age limit in this regard; the plans, if any, he has to make any changes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12455/99]

As Minister for Finance, my responsibility for recruitment policy relates to the Civil Service alone. Recent general service recruitment competitions have not imposed any requirement for an upper age limit, other than the normal retirement age. Of course, the Employment Equality Act, 1998, which is expected to come into operation later in the year, does allow for upper age limits in certain limited circumstances. I would not envisage many such cases arising in the Civil Service.
