Vol. 504 No. 5

Written Answers. - Protection of Young Persons (Employment) Act.

David Stanton

Ceist:

97 Mr. Stanton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will report on the progress of the monitoring group established in 1997 to appraise the effectiveness of the Protection of Young Persons (Employment) Act, 1996; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12451/99]

The protection of young persons monitoring group, the membership of which includes representatives of ICTU, IBEC, the Children's Rights Alliance, has met on three occasions to date, most recently on 18 February 1999. At its meetings the group discussed a wide range of issues, including difficulties experienced in enforcing the legislation. While the work of the group is ongoing, I understand that it was agreed that a submission would be made to me outlining certain measures which might be considered to improve the enforcement of the legislation and thus the operation of the Act.

I expect to receive the group's submission in the near future.
