Vol. 505 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tax Exemptions.

Seán Haughey

Ceist:

136 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Finance if he will exempt from tax a pension paid by the Department of Defence to a widow in respect of her late son; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14510/99]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the pension from the Department of Defence referred to in the question is liable to income tax. Based on information provided by the Deputy, this widow would be exempt from income tax if her income in the current tax year is less than £6,500. However, as her estimated gross income for the year is £9,546, she is, therefore, liable to pay income tax on that income.
