Vol. 505 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Patrols.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

226 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if the Garda has received requests from residents of Kevin Barry House, Dublin 7, for more regular Garda foot patrols to deal with gangs of youths congregating nearby and causing concern to residents; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14263/99]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that in late 1998, a number of residents complained to the Bridewell Garda station about youths loitering in the area. As a result, Garda patrols operating in the area were given specific instructions to enforce the provisions of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994 and a number of arrests for public order offences have been made. I am also informed that the area is patrolled by mobile units, both uniformed and plain clothes, attached to the Bridewell Garda station. Two gardaí have been assigned to the area as part of neighbourhood policing, and they perform regular patrols. These two gardaí liaise with local residents and the Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator. I am assured by the Garda authorities that the area will continue to receive the appropriate attention.
