Vol. 505 No. 6

Written Answers. - Institutes of Technology.

John Perry

Ceist:

249 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if a person (details supplied) in County Sligo will have her position upgraded to head of department as she currently holds an L2 head of section post; if a favourable decision will be made based on the information provided; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14284/99]

Institutes of technology are statutory bodies established under the Dublin Institute of Technology Act, 1992 and the Regional Technical Colleges Act, 1992. Under those Acts, the governance and day-to-day activities of the institutes are matters for which the governing body and the management staff of the institutes are responsible. I have no statutory function in relation to the appointment of an individual to a post. That is a matter for the institute in question.

However, my Department has received a request from the Institute of Technology, Sligo, for a post of head of department for the School of Business and Humanities and has agreed to sanction such a post. The filling of the post will be a matter for the institute.
