Vol. 505 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Facilities.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

269 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received an application for a grant towards a gym from Ard-Scoil Rís, Griffith Avenue, Dublin 9; if grant aid is being made available; and the policy when schools qualify for assistance with such a project. [14486/99]

An application has been received in my Department from Ard Scoil Ris, Griffith Avenue, for a grant towards the cost of providing a gym at the school. As the work has already been completed, the request for a grant can only be considered retrospectively. Requests for retrospective grants are decided upon their merits at the end of the year, subject to finance been available and competing priorities at that time.

It is the policy of my Department to provide physical education halls as part of the schedule of accommodation for all new post primary schools. A physical education hall is also provided when a major extension to a school which does not have such a facility is being built. In addition, my Department has a programme for providing physical education halls as stand-alone projects at post-primary schools which do not already have this facility and a number of such projects have proceeded to construction in the current year.
