Vol. 506 No. 2

Written Answers. - Sports Funding.

Michael Creed

Ceist:

374 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he has received an application for grant aid under the 1999 sports capital programme from a club (details supplied); and if a grant allocation will be made to this club in view of the facilities it proposes to develop and the benefit of these to the local community. [14974/99]

An application for financial assistance under the sports capital programme has been received from the club in question. This is one of almost 1,900 applications and will be considered when the grant allocations for 1999 are being made in accordance with the criteria for awarding such grants as set out in the terms and conditions of the new programme.

Given the large number of applications received and the level of work involved in evaluating them, I do not expect to be in a position to make final announcements on the 1999 round of grant allocations for some time yet.

Conor Lenihan

Ceist:

375 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he will provide details of lottery funding for a community facility (details provided) in Dublin 24. [14975/99]

Michael Ring

Ceist:

376 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the funding provided to the Irish Cycling Federation. [15023/99]

Michael Ring

Ceist:

377 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the grant aid provided to the Irish Cycling Federation for each of the years from 1995 to 1998. [15024/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 376 and 377 together.

The information sought by the Deputy in respect of the total funding allocated to the Federation of Irish Cyclists from 1995 to 1998 is set out below.

1995

£107,910

1996

£103,955

1997

£192,893

1998

£188,705

The grants in 1995 and 1997 included special equipment grants of £9,950 and £20,000 respectively.
Allocations to national governing bodies of sport (NGBs) are decided on the basis of recommendations made to my Department by the Irish Sports Council which considers the applications in the first instance. The council's recommendations are based on a close and detailed evaluation of applications received from each of the governing bodies and are made with regard to the criteria for grant approval outlined in my Department's section 15 and 16 Reference Book prepared under the Freedom of Information Act, 1997.
In relation to 1999, as allocations to NGBs under the international carding scheme in respect of their high-performing members have still to be finalised, comparable figures with those given above will not be available until then.

John V. Farrelly

Ceist:

378 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he has received an application from a club (details supplied) in County Meath for lottery assistance; if he will take into consideration the number of children who avail of this facility when deciding on grant allocation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15225/99]

Michael Creed

Ceist:

379 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he has received an application for funding from a club (details supplied) under the 1999 sports capital programme; and if he will make a substantial grant allocation to it in view of the programme of development submitted for grant aid and the enormous benefit to the local community. [15226/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 378 and 379 together.

Applications for financial assistance under the sports capital programme have been received from the clubs in question. These are two of almost 1,900 applications received and will be considered when the grant allocations for 1999 are being made in accordance with the criteria for awarding such grants as set out in the terms and conditions of the new programme.

Given the large number of applications received and the level of work involved in evaluating them, I do not expect to be in a position to make final announcements on the 1999 round of grant allocations for some time yet.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

380 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the reason a club (details supplied) in Cork has not received the £12,000 grant allocated in 1997; and the way in which it can draw down the grant in view of the fact all the work has now been completed. [15227/99]

A grant of £12,000 was allocated to the club in 1997 under the sports capital programme.

In line with standard procedures, payment of the grant is subject to the club providing specific documentation and information confirming that the proposal complies with the terms and conditions of the programme. My Department wrote to the club in September 1998 outlining the information which is required. As soon as the documentation is received and found to be in order, payment will be made.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

381 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation when the £70,000 which his officials have promised to allocate to a club (details supplied) in Dublin 11 can be drawn down by the club; the reason for the delay in releasing the allocation; and if the matter will be dealt with as soon as possible. [15438/99]

A grant of £70,000 was allocated to the club in 1998 under the sports capital programme.

The grant will be paid as soon as the deed of trust, which is currently being arranged by the Chief State Solicitor's Office and the solicitors acting on behalf of the club, has been executed.
