Vol. 506 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Billy Timmins

Ceist:

401 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding Grangecon national school, County Wicklow, which is anxious to be considered for a resource teacher and to retain its second mainstream teacher. [14925/99]

An application seeking resource teacher support for the school in question is currently being considered by my Department's inspectorate. The school will be advised of the outcome as soon as the inspectorate has completed its consideration of this request.

With regard to the retention of the second mainstream teacher, the staffing of primary schools is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous school year. This is in accordance with guidelines agreed between this Department and the education partners.

The current staffing of Grangecon national school, is one principal and two mainstream class teachers based on an enrolment of 56 as at 30 September 1997. The enrolment as at 30 September 1998 (on which the staffing for the 1999-2000 school year is based) was 49. I regret that this enrolment does not meet the retention figure for the second assistant, this is notwithstanding the fact that the retention figure was reduced from 55 to 53 in the 1999-2000 staffing schedule.
