Vol. 507 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Jim Higgins

Ceist:

15 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Finance the reason his Department did not finalise the purchase of the town hall in Ballina, County Mayo, which had been approved as a suitable location for a new Garda station; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16094/99]

The town hall, Ballina, was offered for sale by public tender. The Commissioners of Public Works submitted a bid which they considered represented the upper limit of the value of the site for the development of a Garda station. Their tender was unsuccessful.

The town hall is one of a number of sites in Ballina which are considered suitable for the development of a Garda station. The commissioners are now in contact with the owners of other prospective sites. They will actively pursue this matter with a view to the very early acquisition of a suitable site.
