Vol. 507 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tribunals of Inquiry.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

69 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the total cost to date of the Flood tribunal; the daily cost of the tribunal; and the provision, if any, he has made for the total overall and associated costs. [16212/99]

The total expenditure in relation to the planning tribunal up to 22 June 1999 was £3,753,810. The tribunal was established on 4 November 1997 giving a total of 595 days up to 22 June 1999. This gives an average daily cost of £6,309, including weekends, holidays and the initial set up period before the tribunal commences its work. Provision of £2.65 million has been made in my Department's Vote for 1999 for the running of the tribunal, of which £1,171,495 has been paid to date. The total cost of the tribunal cannot be estimated at this stage as this depends on when the tribunal finalises its business and on whether Mr. Justice Flood makes any order with regard to costs.
