Vol. 507 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

108 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has received an application for extra classroom assistants from St. Michael's House, Ballymun Road, Dublin 11; if so, when a decision will be made on the request; if budgetary provisions for classroom assistants has been provided for 1999; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16244/99]

The Deputy will be aware that I recently announced a major new initiative in the special education area under which all children in the primary system assessed as having special needs arising from a disability will be entitled to an automatic response to those needs.

The level and nature of the response in each case will depend on the assessed needs of the child or group of children involved. The response may take the form of a full or part-time child care support depending on the number of children involved and the nature of their needs.

The application from St. Michael's House special school, Ballymun, for special needs assistants is being considered in the context of my recent initiative. The school inspector has been asked to provide a report on the level of support required by the school to cater for pupils with special educational needs enrolled there.
