Written Answers. - Defence Forces Property.

Gerry Reynolds

Ceist:

41 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Defence the progress, if any, he has made in his discussions with private consortia with a view to locating in Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16732/99]

Ceist:

77 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Defence the position in relation to developments in Baldonnell airport; and the decision, if any, made in relation to the use of Baldonnel by private companies. [16612/99]

Frances Fitzgerald

Ceist:

113 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Defence the position in relation to developments in Baldonnell airport; and the decision, if any, made in relation to the use of Baldonnel by private companies. [16824/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 41, 77 and 113 together.

In recent months a number of approaches have been made by private concerns regarding the possible use of facilities at Baldonnel aerodrome. My concern, in examining these proposals, would be to protect the military aviation interests at the aerodrome. The question of extending usage of these facilities for hire or reward requires careful consideration as it may have implications regarding licensing of the facility for commercial use. However, the greater utilisation of this under-used resource could have benefits for both military and civil aviation in Ireland.

The other implications of the greater use of Baldonnel by private companies are appropriate for consideration by the Minister for Public Enterprise. However, I will be taking a positive approach and co-operating fully with that Department in examining any proposals received in the matter, subject to the special requirements of the Air Corps.
