Nora Owen

Ceist:

130 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Health and Children the money to be spent on upgrading the facilities in St. Ita's Hospital during each of the years from 1999 to 2001 onwards. [17024/99]

The Eastern Health Board is responsible for the provision of services at St Ita's Hospital, Portrane, County Dublin. In addition to the board's annual direct expenditure on maintenance at the hospital, the board proposes to spend a total of £793,000 in enhancing facilities in 1999, including the upgrading of the psychiatric admission and assessment units in respect of which I have provided the necessary capital funding. Over the next three years the board hopes to continue the upgrading and development of facilities at the hospital with particular emphasis on the development of alternative accommodation for patients with a mental handicap on and off the hospital campus. The three year development will be funded by a capital allocation of £13 million £7 million from the Department's capital programme and £6 million from the sale of Eastern Health Board land of which £500,000 has been allocated this year in respect of design and planning costs associated with this project.
