Vol. 507 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Noel Ahern

Ceist:

246 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department will re-examine the staffing position of Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan, which has been threatened with losing a teacher in view of the fact it was one pupil under the quota for 1998 to 1999; and if he will authorise retention of the existing eight teachers for September 1999 in view of the fact that, with new enrolments, the quota will be exceeded by 26 pupils in 1999. [17113/99]

The staffing of primary schools is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous school year. This is in accordance with guidelines agreed between this Department and the education partners.

The current staffing of Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan is a principal and seven mainstream class teachers based on an enrolment of 189 as at 30 September 1997. The school also has the services of a shared remedial teacher.

The enrolment as at 30 September 1998, on which the staffing for the 1999-2000 school year is based, was 185 pupils. The seventh teaching post would normally be suppressed in these circumstances. However, I am pleased to advise the Deputy that the school has qualified for the retention of the seventh post under developing school criteria. This post has been sanctioned provisionally pending confirmation of the enrolment of the school as at 30 September 1999.
