Vol. 507 No. 4

Written Answers. - EU Grants.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

89 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the total payments to the 146,300 farmers in 1998; the average payment to farmers of EU benefits, investments, supports, special assistance and other grants; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17015/99]

A total of £1,070,711 million was paid to farmers in 1998. This includes £1,038 million in direct income payments and £32.711 million in on-farm investment.

Based on the 146,300 farmers identified in the CSO's agricultural labour input survey, this would give an average payment of £7,319.

The figures relate only to payments made directly to farmers in respect of agriculture. Accordingly, they do not include indirect payments made under the various market support schemes or, for example, payments in respect of social welfare.
