John Gormley

Ceist:

166 Mr. Gormley asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the views, if any, she has regarding putting the Vantastic project on a permanent footing; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18327/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 165 and 166 together.

The Vantastic project was started by the Centre for Independent Living in 1994 and provides an accessible taxi service for people with impaired mobility. FÁS assisted the Centre for Independent Living in 1998-99 through community employment support with funding in excess of £177,000 and the centre has received additional funds from the lottery to cover insurance/maintenance etc. The Vantastic project currently has 28 participants and is due to finish on 7 January 2000. Renewal of the project will be considered at the next monitoring committee meeting in November.
The primary purpose of CE, an active labour market programme, is to act as a stepping stone in the reintegration of long-term unemployed persons into the open labour market. The programme will continue to be a very substantial active labour market programme and will continue to support the community and statutory sectors, if at a reduced level over time. Consultations on the ongoing funding of essential services, such as services for persons with disabilities, will take place in the central committee on Partnership 2000.
