Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - Extension of Service.

Deirdre Clune

Ceist:

246 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Defence further to Parliamentary Question No. 109 of 22 June 1999, the reason a person (details supplied) was discharged from the Defence Forces under the terms of DFR A10 para 58(h) (Discharge by Purchase) and not DFR A10 para 58(s) (Determination by the Minister) as he had requested and which would have been more financially favourable to him; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17285/99]

The individual in question applied to be discharged from the Permanent Defence Force under the provision of paragraph 58 (s) of Defence Force Regulation A. 10, which provides for a discharge "Determination of Service by the Minister". A discharge under this heading is effectively a "free" discharge from the Defence Forces before a member's service engagement has expired. Having considered the application, the Adjutant-General directed that such a cause of discharge was not appropriate in this case and that the appropriate discharge under Defence Force Regulations was a discharge "By Purchase" under the provisions of paragraph 58 (h) of Defence Force Regulation A. 10. The individual in question was accordingly discharged "By Purchase" having paid the prescribed discharge fee. I am satisfied that the case was dealt with in an appropriate manner by the military authorities.
