Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - Bovine Disease Eradication.

Jim O'Keeffe

Ceist:

348 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will give the definition of a pedigree female animal for the purposes of the £150 supplementary TB reactor compensation; whether all pedigree female animals qualify; and, if not, the basis and the regulation under which they are excluded. [18162/99]

Under the relevant national regulation S.I. No. 297 – European Communities (Trade in bovine breeding animals, their Semen, Ova and Embryos), 1994 a pedigree female animal is defined as "a pure bred breeding animal entered into the main section of a herd book whose parents and grandparents are entered in the herd book of the same breed".

For the purposes of the additional payment for pedigree female animals under the TB and brucellosis eradication schemes grant arrangements, the animal itself must be entered into the main section of the herd book but its dam can be entered in a supplementary or grading up section of the herd book. The sire of the animal and all its male ancestry must be entered in the main section of the herd book. This requirement has applied since 1 November 1994 to the application of additional pedigree payments under the TB and brucellosis eradication scheme grant arrangements.
