Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - Overseas Missions.

Billy Timmins

Ceist:

84 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the situation with respect to Ireland's commitment to send troops to East Timor; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18143/99]

I have already indicated in reply to an earlier question that the multinational force – INTERFET – is now being deployed and is gradually widening its area of control and restoring peace. I also indicated that, subject to approval of the House, the Irish contribution would be 40 members of the Army ranger wing. The multinational force is being established under the leadership of Australia on the authority of the Security Council. Under the terms of Resolution 1264 the force will only be deployed within East Timor. Planning for participation by Ireland has already started and it entails consultation with Australia.

Approximately half the force has already been deployed, including units necessary to establish the beach-head and to secure bases for the remainder of the force. I envisage that after the necessary parliamentary procedure the Irish contribution would be deployed as soon as possible. The precise timing of this is a matter for the Minister for Defence.
