Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - Motor Vehicle Testing.

Deirdre Clune

Ceist:

551 Ms Clune asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when compulsory motor testing will apply; the terms which will apply; the test procedures involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17267/99]

Mandatory car testing will commence on 4 January 2000, with all pre-1992 cars being tested next year, followed by all 1992-96 cars in 2001. Cars registered in 1997 and 1998 will be tested for the first time in 2002, alongside those already tested in 2000. Thereafter every car four years and older will be liable for a test every two years.

Test procedures and standards are documented in the national car test manual 1999, a copy of which has been placed in the Oireachtas Library, together with a copy of my Department's explanatory leaflet on the national car test. A public awareness information campaign on the national car test is being promoted by my Department and National Car Testing Service Ltd., the company responsible for the operation of the scheme. This will be intensified between now and the commencement of the national car test.
