Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - Crime Levels.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

772 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of public order offences committed in each of the Dublin metropolitan area districts in the first six months of 1999; and the reason these figures are not included in official crime statistics. [17909/99]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that statistics in respect of the number of summary proceedings commenced under the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994, have been published in the annual reports of the Garda Síochána since 1995. The statistics in respect of the Dublin region are shown on page 91 of the 1998 report, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library.

I understand that statistics for the first six months of 1999 are compiled at the end of the year and consequently are not available yet. I am informed by the Garda authorities that they could only be obtained by the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of staff time and resources.
