Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Willie Penrose

Ceist:

836 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 435 of 10 November 1998, his Department and Bus Éireann have provided the detailed report which would ensure appropriate transport arrangements are put in place in order that children being brought from the Streamstown area to Kilbeggan secondary school are collected later and brought back earlier to their homes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17589/99]

In order to achieve an efficient and cost-effective transport service, vehicles frequently operate a number of runs to both primary and post-primary schools. Thus the timetable often requires some pupils to make an early start in the mornings and wait for some time in the evenings.

Post-primary school transport services are planned so that as far as possible travelling waiting time do not exceed three hours daily. However, every effort is made to ensure that travelling and waiting times are kept to a minimum and do not exceed my Department's guidelines. The service from the Streamstown area operates within this guideline.

The position is as I outlined to the Deputy in my letter of 23 December 1998. Having examined the timetable provided by Bus Éireann, it is not possible to collect the Streamstown pupils any later in the morning or any earlier in the afternoon as the contractor concerned also operates a service to a primary school and one other post-primary centre.
