Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

John Perry

Ceist:

888 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the position of a person (details supplied) as a senior French teacher for the last nine years in a school with over 600 students is temporary wholetime; if his Department will make him permanent in view of the fact that his request is fully supported by the board of management, the school principal and the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17814/99]

In accordance with the terms of the PCW agreement on the pay and conditions of teachers, up to 95 per cent of the initial teacher allocation to a community or comprehensive school for a particular school year may be filled by the appointment of teachers in a permanent capacity. In the case of the school referred to by the Deputy, the current level of permanency is such that no further permanent appointments can be made within the agreed limit at this time.
