Vol. 508 No. 1

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John McGuinness

Ceist:

892 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if urgent consideration will be given to the case of a person (details supplied) in County Kerry who is dyslexic and is not being afforded the support to obtain proper education; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the educational psychological report recommends that she attends remedial and resource classes for four hours each week and to date there is no appointed resource teacher at her school; if the resources will be provided to the school to enable her to take computer courses in view of the fact most of her exams will be conducted through this medium; if her parents or the school will be assisted to audio record her history and geography books in view of the fact she is unable to cope in these subjects; if classroom assistants are available for similar students; and the supports he can give in this case. [18011/99]

I am aware of the child to which the Deputy refers. The school that this child attends has the services of a shared remedial teacher. An application for additional teaching support and a computer has been received and my Department's inspectorate has been requested to investigate the level of support required. A decision on this request is expected in the near future. No application has been made to my Department for special needs assistant support for the child in question.
