Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

933 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the provision of a non-denominational primary school at Celbridge, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18200/99]

I assume the Deputy is referring to the multi-denominational school in Celbridge. My Department has recently received a valuation of a site for the school from Kildare County Council. My Department has also requested the Valuation Office to value the property and as soon as this report is received the matter will be given further consideration.

935 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the provision of extra facilities at Maynooth post primary school, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18202/99]

Prior to the commencement of architectural planning of a project, it is necessary for the managerial authorities of a school to agree projected enrolments with the planning unit of my Department.

In the case of Maynooth post-primary school, County Kildare VEC initially agreed with the enrolment projections as determined by my Department. This agreement paved the way for the commencement of architectural planning of the proposed extension at the school. However, County Kildare VEC subsequently expressed disquiet at the projected enrolment figures resulting in the deferment of the project pending a resolution to this matter.

938 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the proposals, if any, he has to meet the extra facilities needed at St. Mary's college, Naas, County Kildare. [18205/99]

939 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to meet the needs of St. Patrick's post-primary school, Naas, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18206/99]

It has been decided in principle to grant aid an extension of 1,097 square metres at St. Patrick's post-primary school, Naas, County Kildare. The schedules of accommodation have issued to County Kildare VEC for acceptance and a response is currently awaited. In the vocational sector the teacher allocation is done on a VEC scheme basis and it is a matter for the chief executive officer, with the agreement of the committee, to allocate teaching resources to individual schools in the scheme from within the approved teacher allocation. My Department, having considered an appeal from the County Kildare VEC, approved an increase in the teacher allocation to the VEC for the 1999-2000 school year.

940 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to meet the needs of the "scoileanna" lán Gaelige Kilcock, and Maynooth, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18207/99]

Gaelscoil Uí Fhíaich, Maynooth, County Kildare, was granted provisional recognition by my Department in April 1997. Under the criteria for provisional recognition, the onus is on the school authorities to source suitable accommodation. Since January 1999 the school has been located in temporary rented accommodation in Leinster Street, Maynooth, which is considered to be adequate for the immediate needs of the school. Should the school qualify for permanent recognition it would be entitled to capital funding for a permanent school building. The planning section of my Department is currently considering an application from the school authorities in this regard. A decision will issue as soon as possible.

A new school, on a greenfield site, has been approved for Gaelscoil Uí Riada, Kilcock, and architectural planning is currently under way.

Seymour Crawford

Ceist:

941 Mr. Crawford asked the Minister for Education and Science when the committee of management of Clontibret national school will be granted permission to build a new school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18208/99]

My Department is currently considering a recent report from property consultants concerning the identification of a preferred site for a new school at Clontibret. When the issue of the site has been finalised, my Department will then decide on the question of allowing the board of management to proceed with architectural planning for the provision of a new school.

Róisín Shortall

Ceist:

942 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason a grant for the purposes of resurfacing the playground has not been made available to Sacred Heart boys' national school, St Canice's Road, Dublin 11; when the grant will be allocated; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18229/99]

My Department will shortly be in contact with the board of management of the Sacred Heart boys' national school, St. Canice's Road, Dublin 11, with a view to obtaining costs for the resurfacing works. The issue of grant sanction will be considered further when the actual costs for the works have been received and examined.
