142 Mr. Gormley asked the Taoiseach if his attention has been drawn to the index of sus tainable economic welfare in Britain; his views on whether the CSO would be a suitable body to bring in a similar measurement of progress in Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18293/99]

The Taoiseach:

While there have been exploratory studies of the type referred to by the Deputy, international standards are not fully developed. The possibility of compiling a similar indicator for Ireland and the most appropriate body for the task will be reviewed when more fully developed studies are available.
