Vol. 508 No. 2

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

125 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will provide funding for the augmentation of the Westport water scheme from Srah in view of the fact the lack of proper water facilities will impede any further development of the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18442/99]

Ceist:

126 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when he will approve the amended proposals for the provision of a proper water supply to Murrisk, Lecanvey and Louisburgh, County Mayo. [18443/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 125 and 126 together.

A brief for a major extension of the Lough Mask regional water supply scheme to serve Westport, Newport, Mulranny, Murrisk, Lecanvey and Louisburgh, at an estimated cost of almost £21 million, was received in my Department in April 1998. Mayo County Council was subsequently requested to review the proposal in the light of approvals of water supply augmentation schemes for Newport and Mulranny under the serviced land initiative. Following this review, the council now intends to advance the proposal on a phased basis and has submitted a brief for phase 1, involving an extension from Srah to Westport at an estimated cost of £7 million. The brief is under examination in my Department.

As the proposal is not included in the 1999 water and sewerage services investment programme it comes within the terms of my Department's circular letter L9/98 of 22 October 1998 which asked each local authority to undertake a fresh assessment of the needs for capital works in its area and to prepare a prioritised list of projects based on the assessment. The priority lists will be taken into consideration by my Department in framing future water and sewerage services investment programmes under the next national development plan 2000-06.

127 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the water and sewerage schemes for County Mayo awaiting sanction for funding in his Department. [18444/99]

The information requested is being compiled and will be forwarded to the Deputy as soon as possible. Schemes not included in this year's water and sewerage services investment programme come within the terms of my Department's circular letter L9/98 of 22 October 1998 which asked each local authority to undertake a fresh assessment of the needs for capital works in its area and to prepare a prioritised list of projects based on the assessment. The priority lists will be taken into consideration by the Department in framing future water and sewerage services investment programmes under the next national development plan, 2000-06.

128 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the position regarding the Louisburgh sewerage scheme in County Mayo. [18445/99]

A brief for a sewerage scheme estimated to cost £500,000 was submitted to my Department in 1992 but has not been approved. Schemes not included in the 1999 water and sewerage services investment programme come within the terms of my Department's circular letter L9/98 of 22 October 1999, which asked each local authority to undertake a fresh assessment of the needs for capital works in its area and to prepare a prioritised list of projects based on the assessment. The priority lists will be taken into consideration by my Department in framing future water and sewerage services investment programmes under the next national development plan, 2000-06.

More recently, Mayo County Council has submitted separate proposals for a reed bed system costing £60,000 and for the laying of sewer and watermains along the Westport Road in Louisburgh at an estimated cost of £307,408 under the serviced land initiative. In the case of the reed bed proposal it would be a matter for the council to progress it in accordance with the council's own priorities under the devolved small schemes programme which caters for water and sewerage projects costing up to £250,000. The serviced land initiative proposal related to land not zoned for residential development and is not among the schemes approved under that initiative.

129 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the position regarding the Newport sewerage scheme in County Mayo. [18446/99]

A brief for this scheme was submitted to my Department in 1992 but has not been approved. Schemes not included in the 1999 water and sewerage services investment programme come within the terms of my Department's circular letter L9/98 of 22 October 1998 which asked each local authority to undertake a fresh assessment of the needs for capital works in its area and to prepare a prioritised list of projects based on the assessment.
