Vol. 508 No. 3

Written Answers - Road Safety.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

261 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to provide warning lights on the approach roads to national schools on regional and local roads in view of the success to date on national primary and secondary routes; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18812/99]

Ceist:

262 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the reason a small percentage of moneys allocated to local authorities for road restoration cannot be used for the erection of signposts and road safety signs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18813/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 261 and 262 together.

The maintenance and improvement of non-national roads in their areas, including the execution of safety related works such as the provision of road signs or road markings is a matter for individual local authorities, to be funded from their own resources supplemented by grants made available by my Department. Discretionary grants allocated to local authorities may be used to provide or maintain road markings or road traffic signs. The selection of individual projects to be assisted from discretionary grants is a matter for individual local authorities and neither I nor my Department have any function in the matter.
